The Western Highway (A8) in Victoria is the principal road transport corridor between Melbourne and Adelaide and has a current configuration of a two lane, single carriageway highway in this area. The roadway currently supports interstate freight trade between Victoria and South Australia, the agricultural industry and regional tourism.
Presently, the Western Highway between Ballarat and Stawell is one of the busiest rural highways in the country. It is anticipated that the traffic volume will continue to grow due to increased freight and regional travel.
The upgrade of the Western Highway between Buangor to Ararat (Section 2B) includes the construction of a four-lane divided highway (two lanes in each direction) divided by a central median. In addition to the divided carriageway, the highway will be further improved by the construction of sealed shoulders, safety barriers and upgrades to key intersections.
The major elements of the Scope of Works includes:
6.5 km of new dual carriageway highway between Pope Road, Buangor and Picnic Ground Road, Warrak.
